Now that you have finalised buying your dream villa or flat in Kerala it’s time to get to the nitty gritty of things like home maintenance. It can be intimidating to begin with as home maintenance of your luxury flat in Kochi involves a long list of tasks but with regular home maintenance you can save money in the long run as well as avoid headaches in the future.

You can do most of the regular home maintenance tasks on your own or call professionals to do it. Once you start doing the maintenance, it might get difficult to keep a track of things. Create a home maintenance checklist so that you can maximise your efficiency. Segregate your tasks into monthly, bi-annual, and annual basis. Some tasks need to be done in a particular season while there are tasks that can be done at any time of the year. 

Monthly

• Check the sink drains to see that no debris or clog is collected. 
• Clean bathroom taps, showerheads, and faucet aerators to remove mineral deposits and avoid rust formation. 
• Run water and flush toilets in unused bathrooms to prevent grime or any other kind of build up due to water accumulation.
• Inspect your fire extinguisher to see if its nozzle is clean with no accumulated dust or garbage. Ensure it has the correct pressure, and there is no visible wear and tear on the body and get it repaired immediately.

Biannually

Give your house a deep, thorough cleaning every few months.

Dust every nook and corner of the house.

Clean all the appliances, windows, and furniture. Consider cleaning the rugs and carpets as well.

Gardening time

Maintain your garden periodically removing the dried leaves, dead plants, weeds and other debris. Plant shrubs suitable for the upcoming season to ensure your garden always remain green any season.

Water the inverter batteries

Fill water in the inverter batteries every few months with easily available distilled water. This will increase the shelf life of your batteries as well as increase its efficiency.

Annually

Check the roof surface

Check the roof for any sort of damage like holes or misplaced/broken tiles before monsoons and do repairs.

Clean out the gutter and drainage

Gutters and drains may have accumulated leaves & sediments from water and rains. Clean them once or twice a year & also close all unwanted openings to prevent clogging.

Painting

Once a year before monsoons check the exterior of the house & see if it needs a touch-up on the paint. You can do it yourself or hire a professional for painting it.

Chimney or gas pipe

The kitchen chimney has to be cleaned every few months for its efficient working. Also check gas pipes for incorrect bends, breakage or leakage.
